How Does
Parent Coaching Work?
I will work with you
through
weekly telephone conversations
(45 – 60 minutes) scheduled at your
convenience. One or both
parents may participate in these calls. Additionally we will
exchange e-mails or other written communications as we discover
resources pertinent to our conversations. Experience has shown that
out initial coaching sessions are most effective with
a minimum of a two month commitment
to the process.
Why
Do You Ask For A Multiple Month Commitment ?!
First of all it takes me a little time to get to know you. I believe
YOU are the experts about your
family. I respect the time, effort and thought you’ve already put
into parenting. I need to get in step with you rather than impose my
own solutions which may not fit your family.
Additionally it’s important for you to know that parent coaching,
when done well, is much more than a quick one or two issue-solving
session! Yes, you’ll get help for your challenges. Like:
|
|
|
e |
The unending efforts to be consistent and patient while
raising young children or belligerent teenagers. |
|
e |
Carving out some personal time and maintaining time and
spatial boundaries |
|
e |
Doing it
all
as a single parent, or struggling through your part of a
co custodial divorce. |
|
e |
Increasing frustration and "busyness" as you and your
children add activities or responsibilities to your
lives. |
|
e |
The disturbing influence of television and video games
and the dangerous challenges of children using the
Internet. | |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
But you’ll get much more. You’ll be able to use what you’ve learned
to address the NEXT challenge
that comes into your family system, and the one after that. It
takes more than a few weeks to build both your skills and your
confidence. In addition you’ll have
developed an open, trusting relationship with a coach who knows you,
knows your family system’s strengths and can be a resource and
support for many years to come.
It is truly an opportunity to transform how you feel and function as
a parent!
What’s YOUR Coaching Method?
Coach
Lee’s coaching model is based on David Cooperrider’s work, known as
“Appreciative Inquiry.” The
“AI” model has four phases and each of those phases takes some
time, to talk through, think about and then put into effect. It’s
just like any skill you’re improving. It takes a little practice to
feel competent. And you deserve to be
coached along the way, not just instructed and left to
flounder on your own!
What Are The Four
Phases?
|
Discovery – |
|
We discover what IS working and where your strengths already
exist that we’ll use to build on when facing challenges. |
|
|
Dream
– |
We talk about what you’d really like to see happen, in an
ideal world, and what that would do for you. |
|
Design
– |
We map out some action steps for achieving your goals. This
phase includes implementing some practical strategies
gathering and sharing new resource information (when needed),
trying new or “tweaked” alternatives and sustaining the new
actions long enough to gauge success and gain confidence in
your new skills |
|
Destiny
– |
We literally count up the successes, the changes – even
transformations, and celebrate what you and your family have
accomplished! |
*There are many articles written about “Appreciate Inquiry” on the
internet if you’d like more in-depth information.

Why
Should I Spend Both My Time and My Hard Earned Money On Parent
Coaching?
Unlike the experience of
reading a book on parenting or taking a workshop over a weekend, or
applying that one strategy that "worked" for a friend,
parent coaching partners you
in a collaborative relationship, with a professional whose job it is
to show you your strengths, encourage your growth and assist in
equipping you to come through challenges stronger and more
confident than ever in your parenting skills and the future of your
family.
Smart parents ask for help when they need it.
